Comments are by the photographer and are for educational purposes to explain some of the technical aspects of the profession. Most comments were directed to the owner of Haven's Candies after a test of the quality of digital photography compared to using film and scanning to digital image.

"Lighting looks good and color balance seems to be pretty close to the mark. This collection of large chocolate bunnies taken under florescent lighting retain their natural color with a slight intensification of the painted color on the chocolate body of the bunny.

The interior looks clean and the lighting is well balanced both visually and color-wise considering the lighting comes only from overhead florescent tubes.

How do raw images from scanned negatives or digital files become usable images for use in books, magazines, newspapers and on the web?



How long does it take to process raw images into usable products?


What does it mean to tone, sharpen, color-balance, crop and save to disk?


1 ... First, images are loaded into a browser so you can see all the images taken in the session...


2 ...then the best looking images are chosen and put into a new folder to keep them in order.

3... The selected image is imported into Photoshop and enlarged to see detail of image and color balance of scene.....

4... Image is rotated, color balanced and toned for best image perception.


5... Image is cropped for best composition and elimination of wasted space......

6 ... If necessary, unwanted background or subject matter is eliminated by masking...


7... Pattern taken from foreground is cloned into background for a simpler composition ....


8 ... Final toning, sharpening and burning and dodging is completed to bring out colors and detail of image......

9 ... Image is saved to computer hard drive, CD, DVD, or a variety of disks for future retrieval or transporting.

Processing of image from raw file to finished product can take from 10 to30 minutes or more, depending on original file and desired outcome.

Image may be resized several times and saved in several resolutions and sized for use in production of books, magazines, newspapers and on a web page on the internet.
